City Hall Before

Where the affluent businessmen met. In Raffles’ 1822 Town Plan, Beach Road was set-aside for the European community. The Hainanese community settled in and the street was called Hainanese 2nd street and 3rd street. Traders such as drapers, painters, ship handling services, umbrella makers, confectioneries and hotels flourished. With the decanting of its residents in the 1980s, most of the clan associations have remained in the vicinity although the use for ground level shops has changed.
